Thorburn Associates Passes the 50-Project Mark

Castro Valley, CA October 19, 1998 --

Thorburn Associates passed the 50-project mark in the themed entertainment industry this year, announced CEO and President Lisa Thorburn.  The Company, specializing in acoustical consulting and audiovisual system engineering, was founded in 1992.   In six years of operation, Thorburn Associates has grown to eleven permanent full-time employees, with offices in the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas.  In that time, the company has served 26 entertainment industry clients in the installation of some 58 themed attractions, including 38 specialty film theaters.

"We're proud of our record in the entertainment industry, and especially pleased that so many of our clients are repeat customers." Says Lisa Thorburn, who is a current candidate for the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) International Board of Directors.  "Audiovisual technology is an essential component of modern themed attractions and entertainment centers. With today's sophisticated audiences, integrating that technology seamlessly and transparently is crucial to success of a project."

Among Thorburn Associates' repeat clients are Iwerks Entertainment (24 large format cinemas); MacGillivray Freeman Films (three large format cinemas); White Hutchinson Leisure & Learning Group (three family entertainment centers); Harvey’s Resort Hotel/Casino (three casino projects) and E. Kent Halvorson Inc. (two large format cinemas).

Recent notable and ongoing projects include the Monterey Bay Aquarium (acoustical, audiovisual and show control system design for the remodel of a 299-seat auditorium); Ethel M Theatre, Las Vegas (acoustical recommendations for the theatre and pre-show area, under contract to Cunningham Group); O2b Kids! family entertainment center (acoustical recommendations, including sound isolation and operating systems noise control); the Science Center at Union Station, Kansas City, MO (acoustical recommendations for Iwerks large format theater); the Montreal Showmax Theatre (acoustical system design); and the St. Louis Arch Interpretive Center (new audio system for the tram ride to the observation deck).

Thorburn Associates belongs to 10 different industry associations and its principals are prominent players in the development of their industry and the education of its members.  "We believe in giving back to the community that supports us," says Lisa Thorburn, who is a Certified Technology Specialist of the International Communications Industry Association (ICIA).

Now a candidate for election to the TEA International Board of Directors, Lisa Thorburn has been active in TEA for the past five years.  She helped organize and establish the TEA Speaker's Bureau and helped create the original TEA seminars for the World Gaming Congress and the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA).  She also served as co-chair of the TEA Education Committee.
